speaking skills of the ESP course. However, in our case we have to omit it because of a very small number of academic hours for the whole course, only 24 hours.
Every module has to be finished with achievement test. In our case it's a short one as well, nevertheless we need it to check student's results and their readiness to go on the course. We should not forget that the test is an aid to learning and is primarily concerned with facilitating learners to perform particular communicative tasks, providing feedback on learning, confirming what students have mastered and highlighting those skills needing further attention, encouraging learning, and monitoring progress. In principle, any final ESP test can be classified as a performance test. When devising the tests it is required to follow the following recommendations related to the material included:
- must be as authentic as possible,
- provide accurate and reliable measures of language ability,
- have beneficial effects,
- be practical and economical in terms of administration, time, money
and personnel.
What requires most of the teacher's time is Student's book. It recommended to contain 4 or 6 units with a review unit at the end. Each unit comprises several texts for different kinds of reading, developing skills of reading for main ideas (skimming), reading for specific information (scanning), reading for detailed understanding (to achieve 100% comprehension), as well as listening and speaking skills. All the texts should be linked by the same topic. They are supplemented with lists of key vocabulary and expressions, grammatical explanations and a wide variety of exercises. All the units of Student's Book are followed by a short test or questions to revise and report. [5,6]
The teacher's book is developed to give suggestions on how to teach the course, as well as answer keys to the Student's Book (and, maybe, Workbook) and transcripts of listening activities.
For each ESP course taught at our institute it is recommended to download video clips connected to their major. Computer assisted classes give a good opportunity for students to see and listen to the native speakers doing the same job. Authentic texts and video material on the topics covered during the classes English for Special Purposes (ESP) focuses on teaching English and developing communication skills in English.
