Thus, the course development is the process involving several stages. First, the course developer determines what specific language and skills the group of learners is going to acquire. Students' needs analysis is a significant step. The developer tries to be accurate in selecting the vocabulary to be taught. For that purpose he (or she) has to study the curriculum for all 4 years of study at our institute. The students studying "Petroleum Business" have various courses dealing with oil and gas field development in their bachelor program. Among them you can see:
— Geology,
— Chemistry,
— Computer Simulation,
— Geophysics,
— Fluid Flow Mechanics,
— Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer,
— Metrology,
—Automation of Oil Production Process,
— Oil and Gas Production Business Fundamentals,
— Reservoir Physics,
— Oil and Gas Fields Development,
— Oil Production Tools and Equipment,
— Computer Assisted Production,
— Reservoir Management,
— Well Productivity Control,
— Workover,
— Reservoir Pressure Control,
— Well Logging,
— Well Testing, etc.
As you can see, quite a big number of short courses should be taken into account when designing the vocabulary content of the tailored course of English for Petroleum Engineers. The developer has to study in short the obtained information, understand what they all deal with, what they have in common with each other, and what is reservoir, or production, or drilling engineer's job and what he is responsible of. This information is thoroughly studied and content for 24-academic hour-course is selected. Then comes the time to identify objectives, activities and skills for each module and class. From a variety of methods we have to choose those ones that promise to the most effective. We must keep in mind development of reading, writing, listening, and speaking skill:
— Reading (business letters, reports, memos, journal, reference material);
— Writing (messages, abstract, CV, reports, presentations);
— Listening (video clips, lectures, recorded material);
